Seasonal Span:
Quail Hunting Season in Kansas usually opens in early November and runs through late January, giving you plenty of opportunities to plan your trip.
Prime Hunting Weeks:
To make the most of your quail hunting experience, consider scheduling your trips during the peak weeks in mid-November to early December. During this period, the bird populations are at their highest, and the milder weather conditions create some of the best hunting scenarios you’ll ever experience.
Optimal Hunting Times:
Quail are most active during the early morning and late afternoon, making these times the best for hunting. The coolness of the dawn and dusk not only boosts your chances of spotting quail but also contributes to a more comfortable and enjoyable hunting experience.
Sweet Spot in Late November to Early December:
Hunting quail during late November to early December aligns with the harvest season which is a huge advantage to you as when the fields are cleared, it becomes easier to locate and pursue quail, as they tend to continue flocking in areas where they had cover.
Temperature Matters:
Planning your hunts on cooler days will significantly improve your success rate. Quail tend to be more active and easier to spot in milder temperatures, making your hunting expedition both more productive but also more comfortable.

Kansas Compared to Other States
South Dakota Quail Season vs. Kansas
Similarities:
- Both Kansas and South Dakota boast diverse habitats conducive to upland bird hunting.
- Hunters in both states benefit from extended hunting seasons, generally running from early November to late January, allowing ample opportunities to schedule hunts.
Differences:
- South Dakota does not have quail populations, unlike Kansas. In South Dakota, hunters primarily target pheasant and other upland birds. In contrast, Kansas is renowned for its thriving quail populations, especially bobwhite quail, thanks to sustainable habitat management.
- The accessibility of public lands differs; South Dakota offers a wealth of open public hunting areas, while Kansas has a mix of public and private hunting lands, offering more diverse terrain for quail hunting enthusiasts.
Montana Quail Season vs. Kansas
Similarities:
- Both Kansas and Montana offer diverse upland bird hunting landscapes, providing ample environments to meet the needs of dedicated hunters.
- Both states benefit from strong migratory bird populations, ensuring healthy upland bird species during the hunting season.
Differences:
- Montana does not have established quail populations. Instead, hunters primarily target other upland birds such as grouse and pheasant. In contrast, Kansas is known for its strong bobwhite quail populations, offering hunters a prime quail hunting experience.
- The timing of the hunting season varies; Kansas runs its quail season from early November to late January, while Montana focuses on other upland game birds and has no specific quail hunting season.
- Montana has fewer regulations for feral bird species, allowing more flexibility for hunting without bag limits or licenses for non-native species. Kansas, on the other hand, prioritizes quail conservation and has established bag limits to maintain healthy quail populations.
Oklahoma Quail Season vs. Kansas
Similarities:
- Kansas and Oklahoma share similar climates and habitats conducive to quail hunting, offering hunters diverse landscapes and abundant game.
- Both states experience significant migratory patterns, leading to thriving populations during the hunting season.
Differences:
- The hunting regulations vary significantly, with Kansas having specific licensing requirements that differ from Oklahoma’s. Oklahoma does not allow nonresident hunting licenses for quail hunting which make it difficult for traveling hunters to take advantage of the quail population.
What 2023 Looked Like
The 2023 Kansas quail hunting season was marked by favorable weather conditions and an abundance of birds, combining to provide a standout year for quail hunting. Many wingshooters enjoyed a relatively mild winter that led to higher levels of focus and subsequently, an abundant hunting season. Conservation efforts also played a significant role in maintaining healthy quail populations, ensuring a promising outlook for the future of quail hunting in Kansas.
The trip was unbelievable! The lodge was immaculate, and the food was delicious! I’ve hunted Pheasants in MN, IA, SD, and ND so I’ve been around some good pheasant hunting before, but this was as good as it gets! Those little short-hairs were a sight watching them do their thing. They never ranged too far, they held point without breaking, and retrieved like I had never seen with pointing dogs. Quail hunting was just as great, numbers were plentiful and the dogs were awesome. Just need to remember to bring plenty of shells and shoot as straight as you can!
For me though, the best part of the trip was the extra attention that both Tim, and Peyton gave to my 12 year old son who had never before hunted pheasants, or quail. With their help he was able to harvest some of each (with no shooting help from others). I measure a good trip by when you ask someone “would you do it again”? My answer would be a resounding “yes, in a heartbeat”.
