Typical Daily Schedule

Your day at 10 Gauge Outfitters starts with a hearty breakfast while our team gets your gear loaded and ready. As the sun rises, you’ll step into the fields to watch our German Shorthairs work through a mix of CRP grasslands and row crops. After a thrilling morning and likely a limit of roosters, it’s back to the lodge in Kinsley for a well-earned lunch. If you’ve arranged a quail hunt, we’ll head back out in the afternoon once everyone’s fueled up. Evenings are all about comfort, hot dinners, cold drinks, and good stories.

Hunting Techniques and Strategies

Stay ready and keep your gun in a safe but ready position so you’re not scrambling when a bird flushes. Focus on one bird at a time (don’t get distracted by the chaos), and don’t rush the shot. Smooth and steady wins every time. Our guides will walk you through what to expect, and our dogs do most of the heavy lifting, so you can just enjoy the experience. Whether you hit your limit or miss a few, it’s all part of the fun and those stories are half the reason we hunt.

Game Cleaning and Processing

After a successful Kansas pheasant hunt, how you field dress your birds can make a big difference in the flavor of your meal. It’s a good idea to keep a leg with a spur for identification. Even if you don’t prefer the dark meat, someone else might enjoy it. For a simple and effective cleaning method, just pull back the skin and feathers, use shears to remove the wings and legs, and give everything a good rinse before freezing. This keeps your birds fresh and ready for a tasty meal later on. We clean and package birds for an additional cost.

Lodging and Amenities for Families

Our Kansas hunting lodge is located just north of Kinsley Kansas. While originally built in an early 1900’s as an old schoolhouse. The 10 Gauge lodge now has 6-bedrooms, 2 lofts, 6-bathrooms comfortably sleeping up to 26 guests. We also have a 2-bed bunkhouse for more room if needed. There is a bunk house available for those who have an issue like snoring.

Tips for First-Time Father & Son Hunting Trip

A father & son hunting trip is all about making memories, and a little preparation can go a long way in ensuring it’s a success. For first-timers, patience is key. Pheasant hunting can be fast-paced, but don’t worry if you miss a shot or two, it’s all part of the experience. While the dogs do their job, make sure to communicate and stay in sync with our guides and other hunters. Stay ready with your gun in a safe position and your eyes on the field.

Essential Gear Checklist

For a successful father & son pheasant hunt, make sure you have the essentials: a 12 or 20-gauge shotgun with birdshot ammunition (4, 5, or 6 shot), along with a safety orange vest. Sturdy, waterproof boots will keep you comfortable on long walks, while layered clothing helps you adjust to the weather. Finally, be sure to have sunscreen, bug repellent, and your phone or camera to capture those special moments on the hunt.

Safety Guidelines and Best Practices

Safety is our top priority at 10 Gauge Outfitters. Always wear safety glasses and keep your orange vest visible to others in the field. Keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction, especially when moving through brush or uneven terrain. Never shoot unless you have a clear, unobstructed view of your target, and make sure no one is in the line of fire. Stay aware of your hunting party’s location and communicate regularly. Respect your dog’s space and always keep a close eye on your hunting companions, especially when birds are flushed.

Preparing Young Hunters

Preparing young hunters for a successful pheasant hunt is all about teaching the basics and fostering a love for the outdoors. Start by making sure they’re comfortable with their gear, from safety orange vests to their shotgun. Focus on safety first, ensuring they understand muzzle control, when to shoot, and how to respect the dogs and other hunters. Keep the experience fun and educational, encourage questions, explain bird behavior, and celebrate every small victory, whether it’s a well-timed shot or just a day spent together. Above all, remember it’s about building lasting memories and instilling a passion for the hunt.
