Kansas Turkey Season FAQs

How hard is it to hunt turkey?

Turkey hunting is challenging because turkeys have excellent eyesight, keen hearing, and a tendency to be cautious and unpredictable. Hunters need patience, effective calling skills, and a solid understanding of turkey behavior and habitat. Success often comes from extensive experience, careful scouting and adapting to changing conditions in the field.

Is 20 or 12 better for turkey hunting?

A 12-gauge is more powerful and offers a greater effective range, making it ideal for open areas or long shots. A 20-gauge is lighter and easier to handle, especially for younger hunters or those covering rough terrain. Both can be effective if paired with the right choke and turkey-specific ammunition.

Should I hunt turkey in the woods or fields?

Hunting in the woods is often more effective in the morning as turkeys leave their roosts and move through wooded areas in search of food. Fields are better during midday when turkeys feed, strut, and display in open spaces. Knowing the habits of local turkeys can help you choose the best setting for your hunt.

Is it better to hunt turkeys in the morning or evening?

Morning hunts are typically more successful because turkeys are most active and vocal after leaving their roosts at dawn. Evening hunts can still be productive, as turkeys often return to roosting areas at sunset. However, morning hunts offer more opportunities for calling and interaction.

What should I know before going on a turkey hunt?

Before hunting, scout the area to locate roosting and feeding sites, and practice using turkey calls to sound realistic. Wear full camouflage to blend into your surroundings, as turkeys have sharp vision. Be familiar with local regulations, and aim for the base of the neck for a clean, ethical shot.
