Kansas Pheasant Hunting Lodge - Planning a Kansas Pheasant Hunt

Preparing for Your Upcoming Pheasant Hunt

Introduction

Setting out on a pheasant hunt is an exciting experience, but if you want to maximize the success of your hunt it’s essential to practice a few necessary skills before even heading out into the field. This guide will walk you through the four most important skills we recommend practicing before you head out on your hunt: pheasant behavior, shooting techniques, physical and mental preparation, and getting familiar with the gear.

Hunt even later with out European Tower Shoots!

During the European driven tower shoot, hunters will occupy one of 8 stations located in a circle approximately 100 yards from our tower making a complete circle around the tower. The tower stretching to over 30′ in the sky is where two guides will be releasing pheasants at intervals of 10-16 per session. The pheasants when released, cruise at treetop height across the stations, streaking across the sky in all directions.

Understanding Pheasant Behavior

Pheasants are elusive and unpredictable birds, making it extremely important to understand their flight patterns and common habitats if you want to finish your hunt with a hefty bag of birds.

Flight Patterns:

Pheasants typically fly in a low, erratic manner, often bursting from cover and veering quickly. Practicing your shooting skills on clay pigeons with similar positions and speed will help you develop the reflexes you need to hit a moving bird.

Common Habitats:

Pheasants thrive in diverse landscapes, including grasslands, cornfields, and wooded areas. Learning how to effectively search for birds in each environment takes a considerable amount of time, which is why it’s recommended to join a local guide in the area, even if you’re an experienced hunter.

Sharpening Your Shooting Skills

Developing accurate shooting skills as it relates to a pheasant’s speed and the most common distance you’ll be firing at is essential for a successful pheasant hunt. Here are some effective training methods:

Patterning Your Shotgun:

Ensure your shotgun’s choke is appropriate for pheasant hunting and that the pattern is consistent at various distances.

Practicing with Clay Targets:

Clay targets hidden out of sight and rotating randomly will adjust the flight pattern of the clay and help simulate the erratic flight of pheasants. You should practice with both skeet and trap shooting leading up to your planned hunt date to build your aim and reflexes specifically for pheasants in two different scenarios.

Skeet Shooting Techniques:

Since skeet shooting involves shooting at targets that are thrown from two stations, this will help you practice aiming and firing in one direction, and then immediately adjusting to another angle and speed, accurately simulating the behavior of how real birds fly.

Trap Shooting for Upland Hunters:

Trap shooting is one of the first ways hunters used to prepare for bird hunts, and is a great way to practice your shooting. Trap shooting focuses on hitting targets that are launched from a single, ground-level station, at multiple angles, helping to simulate the more predictable flight paths of pheasants as they fly further away from you.

Simulating Live Hunting Scenarios:

Taking time to practice shooting at moving targets from different angles and distances with your full gear on will help you prepare for real-life hunting situations so it doesn’t impact your speed or reaction times during your hunt.

Building Physical and Mental Endurance

Pheasant hunting can be physically demanding, requiring stamina and endurance, but it’s also important to be able to maintain mental focus through the fatigue during your hunt.

Cardiovascular Training:

Going for runs, bike rides, and hikes will help improve your heart rate and stamina which is crucial for the miles of physically demanding activity a pheasant hunt requires. Note that it normally takes the heart around five weeks to get conditioned for a specific activity, so don’t wait until the week before your hunt to start cardio training.

Strength and Flexibility Exercises:

To meet the demands of carrying your gear and walking through various terrains, it’s essential to build strength and flexibility across your entire body. You’ll need durability in your arms, back, and shoulders to carry and use a shotgun, and weighted back squats will help build the necessary strength in your lower body. Incorporating flexibility into your strength training program will also help to prevent injuries.

Mental Focus Drills:

Practicing mindfulness exercises like meditation and visualization will help improve your concentration and ability to stay calm under pressure.

Practicing with Your Hunting Dog

If you’re responsible for bringing a hunting dog on your pheasant hunt, it’s crucial to spend quality time together, teach basic commands and hand signals, and practice retrieving. Watch this training video that dives into how to train your hunting dog to be a reliable and effective hunting partner.
