Kansas Turkey Hunting

Kansas Turkey Hunts – Rio Grande Turkey

10 Gauge Outfitters is committed to providing our clients with Kansas turkey hunts, experiences that will last a lifetime. Complete a turkey grand slam and fill your Rio Grande turkey tag with us!

The Rio Grande wild turkey is similar to the other subspecies of wild turkeys. Rio Grande turkey’s can measure up to four feet tall and they have exceptionally long legs. Being pale in color with a copper band these turkey’s have tail feathers that are yellow, tan, or buff-tipped. As with other subspecies of turkey, toms have a beard on the chest and spurs on the lower legs, while the hens do not. Hens are similar in appearance and size to the males but have a duller appearance and weigh less. An average Rio Grande turkey hen weighs about 8-12 lbs, in comparison to a mature tom that weighs about 20 lbs.

What Rio Grande Turkey Enjoy

A Rio Grande turkey diet consists of plant life and insects. These turkeys enjoy hiding out in wooded areas near streams and rivers. Our hunters are typically setup between these local roost areas and food sources throughout our 16,000 acres of prime habitat. Expect a true thrill on your turkey hunt, hearing the birds gobbling on the roost early in the morning and then hearing the return calls get closer and closer until big strutting-gobbling tom is in your face.

Only reason I’m giving 5 Stars is because there’s not an option to leave 6. Tim and the entire staff at 10 Gauge go above and beyond to provide a great experience. You can totally tell outfitting isn’t an off season side gig for these guys. They take putting hunters where they need to be for a great hunt seriously, and it shows. The guides, dogs, meals and accommodations are all excellent. Tons of birds too! Cant wait to go back!” –  Trip G.

    Your Kansas Turkey Hunts

Your turkey hunting morning will start off with coffee and breakfast at our Kansas hunting lodge. Shortly there after we will head to the field about an hour before light to locate gobbling tom on roost. If our roosted bird is not successful then we will start what we a 10 Gauge call trolling for workable bird. You might hunt across a mix of agriculture and river-bottom habitats. With effective calling, strategic set-ups, and working birds you should be successful.

Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks allows turkey hunting ½ hour before sunrise to sun set. In Kansas we are also allowed to feed turkeys. Our feeders are set up different locations for our Kansas whitetail hunting that clients take advantage of if needed.
