The Rio Grande wild turkey is similar to the other subspecies of wild turkeys. Rio Grande turkey’s can measure up to four feet tall and they have exceptionally long legs. Being pale in color with a copper band these turkey’s have tail feathers that are yellow, tan, or buff-tipped. As with other subspecies of turkey, toms have a beard on the chest and spurs on the lower legs, while the hens do not. Hens are similar in appearance and size to the males but have a duller appearance and weigh less. An average Rio Grande turkey hen weighs about 8-12 lbs, in comparison to a mature tom that weighs about 20 lbs.
What Rio Grande Turkey Enjoy
A Rio Grande turkey diet consists of plant life and insects. These turkeys enjoy hiding out in wooded areas near streams and rivers. Our hunters are typically setup between these local roost areas and food sources throughout our 16,000 acres of prime habitat. Expect a true thrill on your turkey hunt, hearing the birds gobbling on the roost early in the morning and then hearing the return calls get closer and closer until big strutting-gobbling tom is in your face.
